Things have been working fine and have run into an issue compiling rtabmap from source from tag 0.16.3. I've used this version to match rtabmap_ros (also 0.16.3).
This is starting from a scratch clean clone of the rtabmap repo on ubuntu 16.04 with ros kinetic (checkout of 0.16.3 in the lined gist).
